What is Airsoft?

Airsoft is a modern combat sport or recreational hobby in which participants eliminate opponents by hitting each other with spherical pellets (BB's), launched from airsoft guns.

Airsoft dates back to 1970's Japan where firearms were difficult to obtain due to local laws and people sought a legal alternative to owning actual firearms.

Airsoft guns are spring loaded, electric or gas powered guns that fire small spherical plastic pellets of either 6mm or 8mm (0.24 inches or 0.32 inches).  Generally they are replicas (in apperance only, they cannot be converted to fire real bullets) of real firearms.

While in essence the three types of airsoft guns, spring loaded, gas powered and electric, all work on the same principal of compressed gas expanding to force a pellet down the guns barrel, each type has it's own advantages and disadvantages.

Common Misconceptions

There are rumors, driven by the realistic look of some airsoft guns, that they can be modified to kill.  It is impossible to convert or modify any airsoft replica to fire a real bullet due to the materials (mostly plastic), internal design (battery/ gas powered) and construction that differ completely from real firearms.

Airsoft guns are occasionally confused with other, higher powered types of air guns which are dangerous and can be potentially lethal.  BB guns and other air guns use high-density pellets which are metal and are not to be confused with the low-density, plastic pellets airsoft guns use.  Metal pellets used in air guns have a much higher velocity (1000 fps) that have the potential to break the skin.  Airsoft guns do not have such high velocities and the plastic pellets do little except leave a sting.  Although, when using higher priced spring and electric rifles, the pellets are able to leave tiny red spots and bruises.  However, like paintball, proper protection, including protective eye ware and clothing should be worn at all times.
